History: Home to a gallery of portraits related to the Guise and Orléans families, the Château d’Eu also housed portraits of figures with strong ties to the King of France, including General Kellermann. Indeed, during the Battle of Valmy, Kellermann, who commanded the French armies, was seconded by the young Duke of Chartes, the future Louis-Philippe. At the time, he was a lieutenant general, only 19 years old. He was accompanied by his younger brother, the Duke of Montpensier. The two men would always maintain a relationship of mutual respect. In January 1836, a series of portraits of generals from the Revolution who had fought alongside the future king was commissioned for the dining room of the Château d’Eu. The proposal for these portraits is available for consultation at the National Archives (20144790/61): -For General Montesquiou, Mr. Riondet. -For Rochambeau, Miss Brisson. -For Luckner, Miss Delaval. -For Biron, Mademoiselle Revest, likely the version preserved at the Army Museum. -For Valence, Madame Savoye. -For Kellermann, Monsieur Cornu. -For Alexandre de Beauharnais, Fournier de Berville. This painting is currently housed at the Domaine de la Pagerie. These portraits were bust versions of the full-length portraits commissioned less than two years earlier (April 1834) for Room 1792 at the Palace of Versailles, notably by Rouget. Related work: -Full-length portrait of General Kellermann by Georges ROUGET for the historical galleries of Versailles (1834–1835).
