MEZZARO DELLA NAVE, Speich Manufactory, Genoa, Italy, ca. 1830, cream-colored cotton canvas printed with a woodblock. The design features a gnarled tree of life laden with heavy exotic flowers, standing on a flower-covered mound populated by small mammals. On either side are the ruins of a fortified castle, a sailing galleon, and a giraffe being transported on a raft. This last detail evokes the famous gift presented to King Charles X by the Viceroy of Egypt, Mehmet Ali, in 1827—a motif that was widely adopted in the decorative arts—featuring a border with flowering Kashmiri palm motifs.
