Victor ADAM (1801–1866) and Eugène-Antoine GUILLON (1834–191 - Lot 162
Victor ADAM (1801–1866) and Eugène-Antoine GUILLON (1834–1914) “The Battle of the Quaregnon Barrier on April 29, 1792” OIL ON CANVAS (signs of wear and minor imperfections) stenciled on the back: “Battle of Quaregnon (Hainaut), April 19, 1792.” The first hostilities of the campaign. Louis Philippe d’Orléans, Duke of Chartres, colonel of the 14th Dragoons (formerly the Chartres Dragoons Regiment, since the reign of King Louis Philippe), and Antoine Philippe d’Orléans, Duke of Montpensier, his brother and a dragoon officer, saw their first combat here ” and “Painting commissioned by King Louis Philippe, painted by Victor Adam before 1848, left unfinished, and completed in 1903 by Eugene A. Guillon” 98.5 x 134 cm Gilded frame (with damage and missing sections) History: Our painting was commissioned by Louis-Philippe during the July Monarchy using funds from the King’s civil list for one of his residences. As is often the case, the commission commemorates a glorious event in the future king’s career. Here, it depicts the rallying of retreating French soldiers at the Battle of Quaregnon (April 29, 1792) led by the young Louis-Philippe, Duke of Chartres—a duke who would be promoted to lieutenant general the following day. The painting was begun by Victor Adam, but it remained unfinished when the regime fell (1848). The settlement of accounts for painters’ commissions from the former royal civil list (1852) lists our painting as having a value of 1,200 francs at the time of the commission, of which no amount was paid before February 28, 1848, and 800 francs were paid after that date. The painting is indeed marked “Unfinished” in the remarks section of this statement. The work was later resumed and completed by Eugène-Antoine Guillon, a student of Flandrin who exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1861 to 1914. Appraiser: Arnaud de Gouvion Saint-Cyr
