A NECESSAIRE A ECRIRE DIT DE BARRADELLE (name of its invento - Lot 76
A NECESSAIRE A ECRIRE DIT DE BARRADELLE (name of its inventor) in silver sheathed in black studded leather. The set includes a penholder, a quill, a dry-point compass, a "demy pied de roy" ruler and an inkwell. The folding ruler is decorated with high-quality flowers and foliage. The main instruments are in silver with fleur-de-lis hallmark (discharge of small silver objects for the city of Paris). In view of the instrument's date and quality, it can be attributed to the workshop of Jacques Nicolas Baradelle (1700-1770). Paris, circa 1750-1760. Gross weight: 87 grams. Height (total): 12.7 cm (One instrument missing, oxidation). Note: Jacques Nicolas Baradelle (1700-1770), son of a watchmaker and godson of Cassini (director of the Paris Observatory). After years of training with J.Le Maire and N.Bion (two leading manufacturers of scientific instruments and globes), Baradelle was awarded the title of Master Foundryman in 1725. He subsequently established himself on Quai de l'Horloge, "under the sign of the Observatory". Renowned for the finesse of his creations, he was responsible for a number of sundials, spheres, rings and armilles, and for the invention of a writing utensil that bears his name. On his death, his son Jean Louis Jacques took over the business until 1790, signing Baradelle Le Jeune. Consultant | Benoit Reverdy
