D'APRES LE PAPIER PEINT PANORAMIQUE DE LA MANUFACTURE DUFOUR - Lot 194

D'APRES LE PAPIER PEINT PANORAMIQUE DE LA MANUFACTURE DUFOUR - HISTOIRE DE PSYCHE- SUITE DE 4 LES (5-8) Modernes featuring Psyché au bain silkscreened in grisaille Each sheet: 182.5 x 53.5 cm (Small tears) The original series of this famous wallpaper was produced by Manufacture Dufour in 1815. Louis Lafitte (1770-1828) and Merry-Joseph Blondel (1781-1853) created the composition, based on the model by François Gérard (1770-1837) and Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (1758-1823). The set was designed and engraved by Xavier Mader (1789-1830). The twelve tableaux of the story of Psyché are based on Jean de La Fontaine's novel Les amours de Psyché et Cupidon (1669), itself inspired by Apulée's tale L'Ane d'or (2nd century). Its originality lies in the twelve-panel composition illustrating the cycle, which can be divided into several scenes. The success of this panoramic was considerable, as it was reprinted throughout the 19th century and again in the early 20th century by the Manufacture Desfossé et Karth.
