Etienne CARJAT (1828-1906) Sketch for a portrait of a smoker OIL ON CANVAS Signed lower left On back, annotated on frame in pencil M. Revel 46 x 27 cm Unframed Etienne Carjat was a French photographer, journalist and caricaturist whose famous portraits include one of Arthur Rimbaud. Along with Nadar, he was the leading figure in the arts, politics and entertainment circa 1890. Works in oil by this artist are extremely rare on the market, and this is probably a youthful work when he first tried his hand at painting.
