DOUMERGUE Gaston (1863-1937) - AUTOGRAPHIC LETTER to Mr. Cuau, Tournefeuille, April 13, 1937. 2 p. in-4. Header with his address. Letter written two months before his death. Beautiful plea in favor of the Franco-Italian friendship as well as an increased agreement with England. He thanks his correspondent for his letter and his note and indicates "When, at the urging of Mr. Poincaré, then President of the Republic, I accepted at the end of 1913 to be President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs, my first concern was to re-establish relations with Italy which left much to be desired ( ) When the war broke out, at the beginning of August 1914, the bonds of friendship and trust were renewed. If I remind you of this old memory, it is because I consider today, as I did 24 years ago, that France and Italy have the greatest interest in being good to each other ( ) The interest of both is also to be good to England. I recognize that at the present time the policy of the three countries does not seem to act in the direction of their cordial rapprochement. This is not a reason not to try to make it a reality ( ) " He concludes by explaining to him that he is too old to tackle the task, that he would appear suspicious in the eyes of certain people, nevertheless he hopes that this agreement will see the light of day and recommends Mr Prade to him.
