BOUGAINVILLE (Hyacinthe, baron de). Journal de la navigation autour du globe de la frégate la Thétis et de la corvette l'Espérance pendant les années 1824, 1825 et 1826. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1837. Atlas complete with 56 plates: 34 ethnographic views and plates, 12 natural history plates finely coloured at the time, 9 maps and coastal profiles, and a large coloured plate representing different types of boats used by the inhabitants of Oceania. In 1824, Hyacinthe de Bougainville (1781-1846), son of the famous navigator, was entrusted with a diplomatic mission to re-establish political ties with the Emperor of Annam in Cochinchina. During his voyage, he visited Singapore, Manila, Java, the coasts of Australia, Valparaiso and Santiago, Rio de Janeiro, etc., and discovered the Anambas Islands off the coast of Malaysia.
