Our drawing is preparatory to an oil sketch on cardboard made in Rome in 1851-1854 entitled 'Roman Beggars' (see William Bouguereau: 1825 - 1905, exhibition catalogue, Paris, Musée du Petit Palais, 9 February - 6 May 1984, p.150, no. 16, repr., private collection). These two studies were used by the artist to undertake in 1865 his composition 'Famille indigente' (Destitute Family), kept at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Birmingham.
