MANUSCRIT. - Memoirs on the Necessity and Situation of Maritime Forces in Relation to the Advantages of Trade. S.d. [second half of the 18th century, after 1755]. Manuscript of about 300 pages, the first 249 numbered, marbled basane, smooth ornamented spine, red title page, gilt dominoté paper lining and endpapers (Binding of the period). Eighteenth century manuscript, with a regular and legible handwriting. Title nicely calligraphed in blue and red ink, in a freehand ornamented frame with small coat of arms at the foot (scratched). Text in brown ink, ruled. Mémoires sur l'état de la Marine et le commerce maritime, by Jean-Frédéric Phélypeaux, comte de Maurepas, Secretary of State for the Navy under Louis XV from 1733 to 1749: Since the King entrusted me with the Department of the Navy and that of Maritime Commerce for the past twenty-three years, I have had the opportunity to make many reflections on these two parts of my administration. The end of the manuscript is occupied by a memoir on the maritime fortifications of France and a summary of the expenditures made for their maintenance between 1733 and 1754.
