Cast silver and gilt pectoral ornament, embellished... - Lot 259 - Pichon & Noudel-Deniau (Azur Enchères)
Cast silver and gilt pectoral ornament, embellished with pearl and turquoise cabochons. Decorated with saints, a Virgin and Child surmounting a unicorn; rim trimmed with grenetis; clasp on reverse. Central Europe, Transylvania, 16th century. Height : 10.2 cm Width : 10.4 cm Gross weight : 200 g Until the 19th century, Saxon bourgeois women wore a decorative pectoral element suspended from a ribbon around the neck in the shape of a large rosette. This is typical of the late Gothic style, with its small figures set in an architectural surround, and is reputed to belong to the costumes of the former Transylvania of today's Hungary and Rumania.
