Superb Venetian sword. - Lot 202
Superb Venetian sword. Chased and gilded bronze pommel, spindle and hilt with two quillons curving towards the tip, decorated in the half round: -the works of Hercules on the pommel, fusee and body knot (the Hydra of Lerna, the capture of the hind of Cerynia, the bull of Minos). -Fantastic creatures and cherubs for the quillons. Blade with median gutter stamped "ENRIQUE COEL" and "ALEMANIA". Length: 101 cm. A.B.E. SF. 17th century. History: Enrique Coel, blade forger, was active in Germany in the early 17th century, sometimes signing in German "Henrich Coel" and said to have been a supplier to the King of Spain. Related works : The shape of our sword, with quillons curving towards the tip, is in the tradition of Venetian facing swords. Here, the chasing is spectacular, worthy of a goldsmith.
