François Pascal Simon GERARD called BARON GERARD (Rome, 1770 - Lot 13
François Pascal Simon GERARD called BARON GERARD (Rome, 1770-Paris, 1837), workshop of. Portrait of Charles X, king of France and Navarre, in coronation costume. Oil on canvas, formerly oval put to octagonal. On the back, the mark of the canvas dealer "Vallé P. Bourniche/success(eu)r de Belot ". H. 74,5 x W. 60 cm In a rectangular giltwood frame with palmettes. History: In 1824, Baron Gérard, the King's first painter, was commissioned to paint the official portrait of His Majesty Charles X, in his robes and with the insignia of the coronation. Exhibited at the Salon of 1825, the full-length prototype, presumably the one kept in the Museum of Versailles (inv. MV4795), was a great success and several versions intended for the departments, ministers or royal presents left the painter's studio, with variations concerning the framing or the background, landscaped or not (other versions are notably kept in the Palais du Tau in Reims or the Prado in Madrid). The image was also used to weave a tapestry at the Gobelins. The Louvre Museum has a bust repetition of the official portrait, commissioned by the King on October 19, 1825 and paid for by 3000 frs, with the same framing as this one (canvas, 85 x 72.5 cm). It is highly likely that our painting was given by the King himself, as shown by a very close painting sold recently which bore a label "Donné par le roi au baron de Ballainvilliers en 1826" (Artcurial sale, 21 March 2018, lot 151, sold for 14,300 ). Moreover, the mark of the canvas manufacturer "Vallé et Bourniche", which took over from the Belot company after 1824 and can be seen on the reverse, is frequently found on paintings from Baron Gérard's workshop. Provenance I - Former collection of the Count and Countess Foy, daughter of Baron Henri Gérard (1818-1903), himself a nephew and heir of Baron François Gérard. - Then by descent, collection T. - Kapandji-Morhange sale, Drouot-Richelieu, 18 December 2015, lot 53 (sold for 7,000 ). - Private collection.
